Famine in Nigeria

Famine in Nigeria

Nigeria is having to deal with a major famine.

There are some regions where you can still find some food, but many locations just don’t have enough potable water. As a result, it’s extremely hard for people to survive under these harsh conditions.

This is the first time in the recent history where more than one country in Africa has had to deal with constant famine. Aside from Nigeria, South Sudan, Somalia, and Yemen are also in danger.

Because of the lack of food and water, many people are suffering. They have weak immune systems, which makes them too weak to fight of the deceases caused by inadequate hygiene and sanitation (see our article on “What is Hunger”).

President Trump is trying to urge the Congress to reduce its foreign aid to the United Nations, so this may end up affecting Nigeria in an adverse manner. The lack of funds and any disaster relief is certainly going to make things worse, so finding a good approach and a true solution to all these problems seems like the best thing to do at this point.

The problem doesn’t only come from the lack of water and food, a major issue is how it is distributed. The appearance of various armed conflicts in Nigeria shows the adverse effects of what war can bring. Nigeria and Yemen, among others, are countries that suffer from drought and armed conflicts.

Unfortunately, famine will continue to be a part of life in Africa for the foreseeable future, and while it would be great to eliminate the causes of famine, all that can be done for now is to deal with the effects.

Nigerian people need our help, so donating and investing in humanitarian projects is the right thing to do.

Hopefully, with the right foreign help, Nigeria will be able to surpass this major crisis.
