Everyone knows the feeling of being hungry, however while most people in the developed world knows where their next meal is coming from, it’s very different if you’re one of the hundreds of millions who don’t get enough to eat every single day. Not knowing where the next meal will come from is called ‘food insecurity’.
East Africa is dealing with a major famine situation that can only get worse as time passes. At this particular time, countries like Somalia and Sudan are dealing with a massive famine. In fact, a drought left around 3 million people food deprived in Somalia alone. According to the World Food Program, around 363000 children under the age of 5 are malnourished, and around 20% of them are risking diseases and death.
The recent war in Syria has managed to dismantle the country in ways no one would ever imagine. The fact that the country’s agricultural infrastructure is ruined due to this war is only a part of a problem, the war has also fractured the entire state system too. The country has a significant wheat shortage. Most of the areas sown with barley and cereals ended up being ruined this year.
With the world’s population projected to hit almost 9 billion by 2050 and food demand to rise by 60%, there is an urgent need to increase food production. We currently look to sustainable agricultural methods to increase food supply and reduce undernourishment and hunger felt by the world’s poor.
